Canadian weather

Watching the local news, weather across this country is horrible this winter.  Record cold temperatures almost everywhere. Some of the events planned for the New Year's Eve party on Parliament Hill in downtown Ottawa - doubling as the ceremonial end to Canada's sesquicentennial celebrations have been cancelled due to extreme cold.  Public skating on the Canada 150 rink will go ahead but the musical events have been called off.

Calgary has cancelled all of their New Year's events.  Environment Canada says at 7 PM tonight it's -28 C but with the wind chill it feels like an unimaginable -38 C/-36.4 F.  Celsius and Fahrenheit meet at -40!

New Years festivities at Canada Place in Vancouver will go ahead as planned tomorrow night.  Translink is offering free bus/skytrain fares from 5 PM to 5 AM.  Let's hope everyone that drinks lets someone else drive or uses transit.  Taxi's will be very busy!

Yesterday in the lower mainland somehow, we escaped the horrible weather.  My cousin Sharon lives in Mission and they had an terrible freezing rain/ice storm.  Power was out at her house for 18 hours. In this cold weather your home gets very cold quickly.  Luckily her power is restored but people in Abbotsford are not as lucky and could be out for a couple more days.  Here are some pictures of communities around us!

Parksville, BC - my friend Margaret lives here.
Parksville is on the east coast of Vancouver Island

A little further east, UBC from Janice's apartment.
I could have taken a picture in Cloverdale, but Janice's picture is so nice I captured it from her blog
Our snow is gone and we only had rain yesterday, today was gorgeous!

Abbotsford, about a 45 minute drive from Cloverdale!
Freezing rain, ice weighing down hydro lines that snapped all over Abbotsford, Mission and other points east
BC Hydro is reporting tonight 109,000 people are still without power and most will not be restored for many hours!

Starting to plan next year's vacation

With the Canadian Dollar/US Dollar exchange rate at 1.40 before the credit card surcharge, we've decided to stay in Canada next year.  W...
