June 4th in History

Correction: 

It's just come to my attention!!!!  This day in 1971, Neil and Donna were engaged!  How could I miss this?   I remembered Tiananmen, but the rest of the "events" were googled.  Sorry Donna and Neil! Happy Engagement day.  At least I remember your wedding anniversary!  LOL

June 4th is the 155th day of the year, 210 more to go.  Tax free day in Canada, just in case you were wondering, isn't until June 9th.

1792 - Captain George Vancouver

June 4, 1792, Captain George Vancouver claims Puget Sound for Britain.

1940 - World War II Dunkirk

June 4, 1940 : The evacuation of Allied forces from Dunkirk ends as German forces capture the beach. The nine-day evacuation, the largest of its kind in history and an unexpected success, saved 338,000 Allied troops from capture by the Nazis.
 

1942 - World War II The Battle of Midway

June 4, 1942 : The Battle of Midway began when the Japanese navy attacked Midway thinking the US forces would quickly be wiped out but due to clever reconnaissance and by letting the Japanese believe there would be little resistance The US were able to send 55 U.S. dive-bombers which took full advantage of the poor strategy, and sunk three of the four Japanese carriers, all cluttered with aircraft and fuel. The attack on Midway resulted in the loss of 322 aircraft and 3,500 men from the Japanese Navy.

1979 - Joe Clark

June 4, 1979 Joe Clark was sworn in as Canada's youngest Prime Minister one day before his 40th birthday.  Justin Trudeau was 44 when he was sworn in.

1989 - China Tiananmen Square

June 4, 1989 : In May nearly a million Chinese students and others held mass protests calling for greater democracy and an end to corruption at Tiananmen Square in the center of Beijing, but on June 4th Chinese troops with tanks and armored cars stormed Tiananmen Square killing hundreds of protesters when firing into the crowd indiscriminately and arresting thousands of pro democracy protesters some of who are still in jail.

1984 - U.S.A. Born In The USA

June 4, 1984 : Bruce Springsteen released his best selling album today Born in the U.S.A.

2009 - David Carradine Found Dead In Hotel

June 4, 2009 : Famed B-movie and Kung Fu actor, David Carradine, was found dead in his Bangkok hotel room while filming a movie. The seventy-two year old actor was found hanging in his closet, but the cause of death was unknown by investigators despite the initial reports of suicide. Carradine had been part of a well known family of actors including his brothers Keith, Bruce, and Robert, as well as his father John.
