Glasgow - we went to Edinburgh Military Tattoo!

Welcome to Scotland!

The bands enter from the Edinburgh Castle
Today is my son-in-law Dave's birthday!  His ancestry is Scottish.  Dave and Cheryl travelled to Scotland a few years ago with Dave's parents, his brother and wife.  His family has a castle and a lot of great history in Scotland.  They visited the castle and signed the family book.

This is our second trip to Glasgow.  We did a bus tour through England, Wales and Scotland in 1994.  It was in August and included the The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. The performance was awesome and I purchased the VHS tape of the performance. It's televised in the UK in September and the BBC does an excellent job is showcasing the event.  Performers from over 48 countries have taken part in the Tattoo, and around 30 per cent of the 220,000 audience each year are from overseas. I found the 2017 Tattoo presented by BBC.  It's an hour long and if you don't want to watch the entire performance, fast forward to minute 48, the end of the fireworks and the finale. Here is the link to last year's tattoo:

Glasgow is a port city on the River Clyde in Scotland's western Lowlands. It's famed for its Victorian and art nouveau architecture, a rich legacy of the city's 18th–20th-century prosperity due to trade and shipbuilding.  Today it's a national cultural hub, home to institutions including the Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and National Theatre of Scotland, as well as acclaimed museums and a thriving music scene.  The port is actually in Greenock a few miles to the west of Glasgow.

The reason we are seeing the Edinburgh Tattoo from Greenock/Glasgow is because Edinburgh does not have a cruise ship dock.  We will be using the going ashore boats while in Edinburgh and it's too dangerous to get passengers transported after dark.  Our ship doesn't sail from Glasgow until 2 AM!

I found this video taken by someone at an earlier performance.  I don't want to sit with my camera videoing because I want to enjoy the performance.  2018 Edinburgh Military Tattoo

Our coach left at 3PM for the two hour drive from Greenock to Edinburgh.  When we arrived we walked a mile up the esplanade and got into our seats.  We opted for premium seating and I'm glad we did.  I asked the driver if we could get an aisle seat for Cec and he gave us row A seats 1 & 2!  The seats were great.  Very comfortable seats and legroom.  We didn't have anyone in front of us.

The performance was spectacular!  The weather cooperated and it wasn't cold!  They kept telling us to dress in layers and make sure we had warm clothes on.  After the performance no problem in finding our bus.  There were people there holding up signs with arrows!  The walk was downhill and easier than going up.  I highly recommend this for anyone coming to Scotland in August.

Tomorrow is a glorious day at sea.  We got home at 11:45 PM and will be sleeping in!  Lots of activities organized, not sure which ones we will participate.  The rain started when we got into Greenock so it may be raining tomorrow.  That's the first rain we've seen and Scotland sure needs it.

Thank you everyone whose emailed to say they are enjoying my blog.  I really appreciate the feedback.  I apologize for the lack of pictures, but I'll post them when I get home.  I was able to post some pictures on Facebook.

Good night from B324 on the Royal Princess.
