Recreational marijuana is now legal in Canada

'TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CANNABIS

Twas the night before cannabis and all through the land,
Every toker was ready with papers in hand.
I in my jammies all covered in stripes
Watchin' the neighbours a cleanin' their pipes.
When out on the street there rose such a clatter,
They'll not sleep tonight just waitin' ta get at 'er!
No more in dark alleys or down on the corner,
Sneekin' the weed like our land for a foreig'ner!
No more Hail Mary's after leavin' confession,
And no more fines for illegal possession.
With a huff and a spliff and a Bob Marley song
We'll be rollin' and vapin' and passin' the bong.
And whatever ya do, don't burn 'yer lips,
Or forget 'yer lighters and cartons of chips.
Yes, tomorrow's the day for filling the till
With blessings from Trudeau on Parliament Hill!
So roll up 'yer doobies, with oil annoint,
Mary Jane to all and to all a good joint!!!

Many people have anxiously waited for today.  Personally, I am glad they are legalizing it because in this city it has been openly smoked for years.  It has been sold in unlicensed stores and the City by laws department and local police turn a blind eye.  This summer they were selling it next to the Art Gallery on a public street.  Only after numerous complaints by the adjoining legitimate businesses did it get shut down.

On April 20, 2018, a rainy Vancouver day, 40,000 people went to the 24th annual 420 event at a gorgeous public beach in Vancouver.  There were 23 medical emergencies and 10 overdoses reported from the beach.  I am not sure what they overdosed on but I read if you take Xanax and smoke marijuana you can overdose.  St Paul’s hospital reported they actually had “almost 40” people admitted for cannabis overdoses that day. Not all got there by way of ambulance and while they can’t say for sure that all were attendees of the protest “a strong correlation” could be made. The patients spent an average of 2 hours in emergency and none of them were admitted into a bed overnight.  4 were under 18 years of age!

423 vendors sold items, no one had a business license nor did they get a permit to have the event.  I did read they helped pay the city for the massive clean up bill.

I am glad it is legalized because now the province can make some revenue and the illegal stores will eventually be shut down.  I am hoping the black market will disappear and organized crime will find something else to market.  Hopefully the 420 organizers never have another event in Vancouver!

Time will tell if this was a good move of our federal government.
