Steveston Community Police Station

RCMP Steveston Community Police Station, Moncton Street
For five years I volunteered at the RCMP Steveston Community Police Station.  I learned a lot about policing and the danger our officers face every day.  I'm glad I wasn't there yesterday!

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – A suspicious package that forced the evacuation of a Richmond RCMP Community Policing office and the surrounding contained three pre-World War II era hand grenades, police confirm.

Cpl. Dennis Hwang says officers were dispatched to the station near Steveston Park just before 5:00 p.m.

“At this point in time everything is safe and the security perimeter has been lifted,” he says. “I believe the [Lower Mainland] Explosives Disposal Unit was able to verify that they were not live.”

The ordeal has prompted a serious reminder from police.

“In the areas where you reside, if you happen to find any ordnance or ammunition or anything you believe to be an explosive, such as dynamite, please contact your local police and we will attend your location. Please do not bring it to the police station.”

Hwang says there were no ill intentions with bringing the grenades to the station, and that the person responsible just didn’t know how to dispose of them.

No one was hurt and all roads have since reopened.

Police have had a conversation with the person involved.
