Roll up the rim to win

You can buy one donut or a dozen.  If you buy 6 or more you don't pay tax!

If you live in Canada, you know this contest.  If you don't, Tim Horton's a famous Canadian donut chain offers "roll up the rim to win" a couple of times a year.  Tim Horton's is known for their great coffee and donuts and in the morning, the place lines up.  At the "Timmies" by our house they had to install another drive through pick up lane because it the original one backed up the strip mall!

I don't go to Tim Horton's often, because it's good and I don't need a donut.  They have wonderful iced capps in the summer and great soup in the winter.  Actually you can get iced capps and soup year round.  They have sandwiches, chili and other lunch time treats.  They have nice tables and free wi-fi so this place is busy.  The food is very good and always fresh.

Roll up the rim of the coffee cup and you win a prize.  I've often wondered how many people win "roll up the rim".  Well, here is a great video:

Furious Pete is going to roll up the rim, what are his chances?

They now sell poutine an Eastern Canada delight
If you haven't heard of poutine, it's french fries, brown gravy and cheese curds.  It is very popular. I think it's disgusting and Cec loves it!

It's clear and cold!

Taken last night at Mt. Seymour
Our weather has been very clear and cold.  I miss Janice's sunset pictures she puts on her blog when she's in Vancouver.  Last night Ginny posted this on Facebook so I'm hoping it's okay I shared it too.  What a gorgeous night to go skiing!

Hangry kids

My teacher friends may not agree with me, but I agree with this Richmond mother.  My friend Margaret has complained about her two grandsons not eating their lunch, saying they didn't have enough time. I've also heard from other parents and grandparents, children are coming home from school starving and when you open their lunch, most of it is still there!

Nutrition and proper eating time should be part of the school day, then let the children out to play for a good long time to give the teachers enough time to have their lunch.

A J McLellan Elementary School Surrey, School Hours:
Welcoming Bell
Instruction Begins
Recess
Recess ends
Noon break - outside play
Lunch entry bell - inside for lunch eating time
Instruction Resumes
Dismissal

If the lunch entry bell rings at 12:07, most children will take time to get their lunch, find their classroom, open their lunch and start eating. This is NOT enough time.
I found this article on CBC.CA

Richmond mom Judie Schneider started a Change.org petition
asking for longer adult supervised lunch times for elementary school children in B.C.
One B.C. mother is tired of picking up a hungry, grumpy kid at the end of the school day and is asking the province to mandate longer lunch breaks, so children have more time to eat.

Judie Schneider says she has heard from other parents in her school district in Richmond that her son is not the only one coming home "hangry," with an uneaten lunch and a bad attitude, because lunch breaks are are only 17 minutes long.

"The kids are hungry from lunchtime onwards until the end of the day and that sets the tone," she told the host of CBC's All Points West.

Schneider wants the Ministry of Education and the B.C. Teachers' Federation to take action and has created an online petition demanding lunchtimes be extended to 35 minutes and be supervised by adults.

The petition has over 7,179 signatures.
'It's chaos'

Many schools in B.C., including in Richmond, have lunch breaks that are around 40 minutes long, however half of that is mandatory outdoor playtime and students often have less than 20 minutes for a meal.

Schools in the Surrey school district for example give students a 45-minute break in the afternoon but only 15 minutes to eat lunch, and in North Vancouver, students have 2- minutes to eat.

This period includes coming in from playtime, retrieving lunch from their backpacks, washing their hands, and cleaning up after the meal.

The result, says Schneider, is wasted food, kids who can't focus on afternoon classes and who return home too exhausted to spend quality time with parents.

The vice president of the Richmond District Parents Association, Andrew Scallion, wrote on the petition website: "I have heard from many, many parents of their frustration with too short eating breaks.

"This is an extremely important issue."

Schneider said parents have also spoken to her about safety concerns, because lunchtime in her son's school is not supervised by adults.

Holy shirt

I don't remember it looking this good
My husband loves his grey Nautica polo shirt.  I can't remember when we bought the grey one, we have many in the closet and always pick them up at the Las Vegas South Premium Outlet Mall. I have never paid more than US$24.95 for any of his Nautica shirts.  We did see an identical shirt in The Bay in Willowbrook before Christmas and it was CAD$135.00!  They are great shirts, they never shrink and continue to look good after many washings!

A while back, the grey shirt got a small hole in the front so I always made sure he changed before we went out.  He continued to love this shirt and continued to wear it at home.  When I washed it this week, I noticed it now has four holes!   Does he still want to wear it, hell yes!!!   Is it in the recycle, oh yes, I won this one.

Now to wear some other shirt for six years....only to change it when absolutely necessary.  Does anyone else have a husband who falls in love with polo shirts?

I just went on the US Nautica site to find a picture and they are on sale.  I guess I'm about to order online and surprise him!  I would hate to pay $24.95 in Las Vegas!

Cell phones - the latest and greatest!

Have you seen the latest from Samsung?  It folds!  It's a tablet and a phone all in one.  I saw it on the news and phoned Rogers who haven't got a launch date yet.  I've seen phones from the "brick" in the '90s to the flip phone and then the smart phone we've all grown to love.  This has changed the market and I would expect Apple to announce the same technology for all my Apple friends.

Samsung Galaxy Fold specs and interface

The Samsung Galaxy Fold packs 12GB of RAM and a high-end 7nm processor, making it one of the most powerful phones on the market.

It also comes with 512GB of internal storage and support for UFS 3.0 (Universal Flash Storage), allowing the handset to read data even faster. There is no expandable storage option, though.

The Galaxy Fold runs Android 9 Pie, the latest software from Google, but Samsung has developed a unique interface over the top to work especially with the screens.

The large folding screen supports three app multi-tasking, allowing you to have three apps open on the display at the same time.

App Continuity allows you to continue your app experience as you fold between the two displays.

Apps such as WhatsApp and Microsoft Office have been specially adapted to work with the Galaxy Fold's 7.3-inch display.

It has a total of six cameras, with three on the rear (16MP + 12MP + 12MP), a 10MP selfie snapper on the front and two (10MP + 8MP) above the 7.3-inch display inside the fold.

Update

9:30 AM, and it's now snowing!  When will this stop!

Snow and more snow

Vancouver doesn't get much snow.  We get a lot of rain and hopefully the temperature stays above zero so snow doesn't happen.  Most Vancouverites don't know how to drive in snow or don't put snow tires on their cars.

Environment Canada forecast 5 - `10 cm of snow in Vancouver last night and early this morning.  So far, we have nothing!  I'm really glad they got it wrong as most of the last few forecasts their predictions have been right on!   On Wednesday they predicted snow right after lunch.  It did snow and I had to pick up Lexie after school.  Thankfully the way I go to her high school I don't have hills.  When I left it was snowing but nicely melting on the roads.  By the time we came back, the roads were white.  That night a 25 minute commute for Cheryl turned out to 1 hour and 20 minutes!  Some areas of Vancouver didn't get a lot of snow and traffic wasn't affected.  Most of the storms have come from the south.  Victoria has broken all snow fall records!  They've really had a bad winter.

It appears the Farmer's Almanac is right:

Those wonderful church bulletins

Hallelujah!    They're Back!

Thank God for the church ladies with their manual Smith - Corona typewriters.

These sentences actually appeared in church bulletins or were announced at church services:
