Canadian Television

Congratulations to Schitt's Creek for winning nine Emmy awards last night.  This was a CBC sitcom filmed mostly in Ontario.  From 2015 to April 2020 it was shown in Canada and as of 2019 it is also broadcast in the UK, Ireland, Japan, South Africa, Fox Asia, ABC Comedy Australia and Comedy Central India.  It was picked up by Netflix so it's pretty well viewable around the world.  What a wonderful Canadian success story!

I don't always watch The Emmy's but during COVID we've watched more TV than I care to admit too.  I've been asking others for some shows they enjoy and my cousin Gordon told me about "Still Standing".  It's another CBC Canadian show that is really interesting.  Jonny Harris, a Newfoundlander comedian is the host.  It premiered on CBC in summer of 2015.  The show's tagline slogan is "towns that are against the ropes but still hanging in there", reflecting the show's premise to tell the "story of small towns in Canada and how they overcome struggles".   We've been watching older episodes on Shaw On Demand and the BC towns we've seen are Bamfield, Tumbler Ridge, Harrison Hot Springs and Lytton.  He really researches these towns and meets and talks to the residents.  It's not only funny but very informative.

Another excellent Canadian production is "Mighty Trains".  It shows trains around the world.   The Ghan in Australia, Kiwi Rail, and Indian Pacific are some of the luxury trains.  The Canadian trains shown are The Canadian a Via rail train that runs from Vancouver to Toronto, White Pass and Yukon and The Rocky Mountaineer!  The program is an hour long and shown world wide.  It's really informative and well done!   We watch it on the Discovery Channel.  The Rocky Mountaineer will be rebroadcast tomorrow at 7PM and I highly recommend this episode.
