In 1975 we had a house built in Steveston. We chose Steveston as it was cheaper than central Richmond. We both worked in Richmond so commuting was never a problem. Our home was within walking distance to Super Grocer, Royal Bank, a drug store and a few small shops that were really nice. Garry Point was sand dunes and the fishing industry was in full operation. On certain days if the wind blew your way, you could smell the canneries!
Over the years we watched Steveston change. The quaint shops were replaced by Starbucks, McDonalds and other chains. In 2003 traffic was getting worse and Cheryl, Dave and toddler Lexie were in South Surrey, So, we moved and we've never been sorry.
Yesterday we went to the old 'hood. In our former subdivision, bungalows on 40 foot by 100 foot lots have been torn down and huge three story houses have replaced them. There are townhouses and apartments all over the area where houses were. That's progress, I guess.
This is a new sign. It's enroute to Garry Point which we would walk to with Lexie in a stroller. The City of Richmond has allowed a movie studio to build a set at Garry Point. It's been vacant since COVID but looks like they are getting ready to continue filming. It's nice to see the money raised by the city will go to parks.
Once nice feature at Garry Point is Pajo's Fish and Chips. When Cheryl went to school some of her friends worked at Pajo's. Others worked at Dave's Fish and Chips on Moncton Street. We enjoyed a nice lunch of fish and chips from Pajo's. They gave me our two orders of cod and chips in a bag, complete with small condiment packages including malt vinegar. The cod was excellent and it was nice to eat by the river.
