I don't understand why the turnout in municipal elections is so small. In 2018,Surrey only had 32% of eligible voters turn out to the polls! This year, we voted early. COVID is going around and I would not be happy if I was quarantined and unable to vote next Saturday. The incumbent mayor, Doug McCallum missed two of the mayoral election debates, one was huge and put on by the Surrey Board of Trade. He was also a no-show on Focus BC not even returning their calls.
This election is the most publicized and contentious civic election I've ever seen. Our current mayor has criminal charges pending against him and will be going to court at the end of this month. The crown doesn't press criminal charges unless there is sufficient evidence. He's hired the most expensive lawyer in Vancouver and the taxpayers are paying for it. Two of the people running for mayor say if they are elected they will make him pay his legal fees back to the city.
At the last council meeting before the election, he pushed through 48 developments with three days notice to the councillors. One of the people on his slate has an interest in a 178 townhouse development! After the civic election there will be an inquiry.
These are some of the signs around town on people's lawns:
The one I should have captured on the truck of another political party:
GET THE MAFIA OUT OF CITY HALL
That was removed pretty quick.
The vote will be split and I just hope ANYONE but Doug gets in. I've done my research and happy with my choices. Thanks to my next door neighbour who was born in Surrey and worked for the School Board who helped me with my choices for School Board.
One more week until voting day. Let's hope the turnout is better than last year.
