Liverpool

Liverpool is a maritime city in northwest England, where the River Mersey meets the Irish Sea. A key trade and migration port from the 18th to the early 20th centuries, it's also, famously, the hometown of The Beatles. Ferries cruise the waterfront, where the iconic mercantile buildings known as the "Three Graces" – Royal Liver Building, Cunard Building and Port of Liverpool Building – stand on the Pier Head.

We arrived in Liverpool at 6:40 AM, not that we were up to watch but Jean was.  Last night we stayed up late watching the local entertainment.  Cheryl, Dave and Lexi joined us in the piano bar.  The local entertainment in the show lounge was excellent.  Four guys with various instruments and three Irish dancers.  They played “Molly Malone”.   Cheryl said they had everyone sing it on the tour bus to the Guinness Storehouse tour.  She remembered all the versus, but lots of the people didn’t know any of the song.

We took the 1:15 Princess tour of the City of Liverpool.  Liverpool was founded in 1207 by King John.  It was a fishing settlement and then became a major port.

We drove to Albert Dock and saw the Beatles statue.  The off to Penny Lane to take pictures of the street sign.  If you saw the James Corden and Paul McCartney Car Pool Karaoke segment where Paul signed the wall, we saw it.  Unfortunately, the City of Liverpool had to put a plexiglass covering over it.  I took a picture, but you can’t tell where Paul’s signature is as it’s been written all over.  We drove past the Penny Lane Barber Shop, saw the bank across the street and the shelter in the roundabout!   The tour guide told us Paul and John lived close to each other and they had to walk down Penny Lane to get to each other’s house.

After Penny Lane we went to St. Anne’s Anglican Cathedral.  It’s the largest cathedral in the U.K. and the fifth largest in the world.  There are three universities in Liverpool.  5,000 students come ever September.

We got back to the ship at 5:20, dinner is at 5:30.  Most of us had the calamari and squid for a starter, which was delicious.  For dinner Cec, Dave and Cheryl had the beef stroganoff and Jean and I had pasta with muscles and a wonderful tomato sauce.  It had a fancy name, but I’m too tired and old to remember it! Lexie eats Fettuccini Alfredo every night.  Tonight, her dad made her put a chicken breast on top of it.

I’ve been on a lot of cruises, but never had a sail away like tonight.  They had a seven-piece band, a town crier, and lots of towns people came to wave us off.  They had confetti and fireworks.  I got it on video and will post to my blog when I get home.  It was amazing!  What a wonderful clean, friendly city!

Pictures are not uploading using the ships wi-fi, so I tried emailing them from my cell phone.  It took 20 minutes to get yesterday’s two pictures to download on my computer!  If it changes you will see pictures on my posts, if you don’t see any pictures I will post them when I return.   Royal Caribbean’s Vroom Wi-fi is much faster.

Belfast tomorrow!

Happy Boxing Day!

We had a wonderful Christmas.  Getting together with family is what Christmas is about.  My daughter, Cheryl, had the entire family over and...
