Before the election was called, I registered to work the advanced poll. Last Wednesday night I attended the training. It was four hours, very interesting and a lot to learn. They gave us a handbook to review before the advanced poll.
The instructor told us the advanced poll was this Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. It's Thanksgiving weekend. I was having dinner, so no problem, I will have it on another day. Then she said the hours of work were from 8 AM to 10 PM, four days in a row! I came home and discussed with husband and decided those hours were too long. I didn't realize the days would be consecutive. You can't leave your post unless there are no voters. You cannot leave the building. You must be available on Election Day at 4 PM for more training on how to count your votes. I called the morning after the training and said I was sorry but the hours four days in a row were just too much.
Today, I got a call and asked if I would go on the "spare" list! Sure I will but will only work the days I can handle. They may never call me or I could get called for election day! I'm good with that.
Now, if I don't return messages or emails, please understand I am a little busy. The training was really interesting. How to handle homeless people, blind people and other people with disabilities. I've never worked an election and maybe this will be a first time.
