North Shore Search and Rescue
Season 2 North Shore Search and Rescue aired this week on the Knowledge Network. If you didn't see Season 1, it's being replayed on the Knowledge Network this Saturday at 4PM. We loved the first season and I read it gets 8.9 on IMDb.

Mark Alan Prosser
You may not recognize his name, but if you live in Vancouver you've probably seen his awesome artwork. He's a local artist and captures the beauty of old and present Vancouver.
Here he is with his painting of Wally's Burgers. I grew up in East Vancouver and this was a favorite hangout in the 60's! Wally's was a very popular place on Kingsway. The burgers were delicious! The Sylvia Hotel at English Bay |
Nick's Spaghetti house on Commercial Drive. It's gone now, but my dad knew Nick! |
Another store that's gone, but lots of memories of the Army and Navy especially annual their shoe sale! |
He's done so many pictures of Vancouver. I just found out he's going to be featured on "This is BC, with Jay Durant". I love his features on Global. I follow him on Facebook and saw this post:
"This is BC, with Jay Durant" featuring Prosser Art is airing on Thursday, May 30th on Global BC News Hour at 6.55pm. Richelle and I got the news today from Jay! Much sooner than we were expecting which is a good sign. We can't wait to see it for the first time with all of you. He is awesome at what he does so we are friggin excited

Huge picnic in Paris!
The French capital's most famous street, the Champs-Élysées, transformed into a massive picnic blanket Sunday as around 4,000 people sat in the sun enjoying an al fresco meal.
The lucky picnickers were selected via a draw and provided with free baskets loaded with delicacies from some top Paris chefs, including puff pastries and creative sandwiches.
The food was prepared in eight temporary kitchens set up along the avenue and provided by restaurants along the avenue, which include the famed Fouquet's — as well as McDonald's.
A giant tablecloth running 216 meters (236 yards) from the Arc de Triomphe to the intersection of Avenue George V served as the sitting area for the event, which came exactly two months before Paris hosts the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics.
The tablecloth had a total surface area of 4,212 square meters (45,338 square feet) and was made in France from 100% recycled fibers, according to organizers.
Mayor Anne Hidalgo also visited the picnickers. The Champs-Élysées Committee has staged other open-air events in the past, including a mass movie showing and the world's largest dictation event.

Casinos in BC
We took a friend to Match at Cascades Casino in Delta for lunch. After lunch we decided to go to the casino to look around. We don't gamble but wanted to check it out. We were asked for government ID. The person we were with had a temporary drivers license as his old one had expired. He left the temporary card in his car. They wouldn't let us in. There is a law that anyone entering a casino must show government ID.
https://www.casinosbc.com/about/id-required.html
Today we plan on meeting a few friends at Match restaurant in Delta. One of the group said she didn't want to go because of the government ID requirement.
Match at Cascades Casino in Langley is adjacent to the casino. If you enter from the east door, you need to show ID. If you enter from the west parking lot door, you go right into the restaurant so no ID required.
Match at Cascades Casino in Delta is in the lobby of the Delta Hotel. You don't go anywhere near the casino, no ID is required.
If you have the Encore rewards card, you save on your meal. They also have Happy Hour from 3 - 6 and great daily specials. It's a nice restaurant to eat at, just a little confusing with the casino rules.

New Pub in the neighbourhood
A year ago, our local pub, Big Ridge Brewing closed down. It was a wonderful pub and they made their own beer. We watched the property sell and a new pub was taking it's place. It's a different concept. It's called Par 4. They have been marketing a golf simulator with food and drinks. Today it opened. We got together with a couple of neighbours and were the first people through the door. They gave the first 150 people a free beer!
On the right you can see one of the Simulator rooms. |
Kathy ordered a veggie burger and her husband ordered a beef burger. They looked delicious. However, if you order a side, it's extra. She ordered apple slaw and he ordered garlic fries. We had pizza's and they were so big we took half home!
Prices are reasonable. Their Par 4 beer was $7.00! We enjoyed our lunch with our neighbours!

Royal Garden Party 2024
In previous years there have been four Royal Garden Parties at Buckingham Palace. This year there are only two scheduled. The first one was May 8th and was attended by King Charles, Queen Camilla, Princess Anne, Prince Edward, Sophie the Duchess of Edinburgh, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.
The weather was a little wet! |
The Prince of Wales was joined by his cousins, Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, Peter Philips, Zara Tindall and her husband, Mike Tindall, as he hosted a garden party on behalf of the King at Buckingham Palace.
Prince William personally invited his family members to join him at the afternoon soiree, as his wife, the Princess of Wales, continues her recovery from cancer treatment.
The rain didn't put a dampener on proceedings as William and his cousins mingled with guests, including a number from William and Kate's patronages, affiliations and passion projects including; Homewards, RAF Valley, Swim England and tenants across Duchy of Cornwall sites.
The future king, 41, joked that it was "perfect weather for swimming" as he met with Douglas Whitlam, President of Swim England, and later revealed that his son Prince George, ten, was a "potential pilot in the making" as spoke with Reverend Squadron Leader Chrissie Lacey, who produced a bag of her freshly baked cookies for self-confessed biscuit lover William.
William also left with a children's book he pledged to read to Prince Louis at bedtime from budding author Rowan Aderyn, part of the Prince's Homewards team in Newport, Gwent.
In recent years, many royal fans have often questioned why the Prince of Wales's cousins do not carry out duties, particularly at a time when there is pressure on a smaller contingent of working royals.

Email & text scams
My next door neighbour lost her husband two weeks ago. We are good friends. I speak with her every day, usually more than once. She's a lovely lady. This morning, I got this email from her:
Hello
I'm unable to speak over the phone due to a serious throat pain caused by laryngitis. Hope this finds you well. Please let me know when you get this I'd like to ask you for a favor
Kind regards
It came from her email, but I responded as it didn't look like her verbiage and I thought it was a fraud. I emailed, "can I come over", and got this back:
Thanks for responding I have been trying to purchase my medication online but it requires payment with apple gift card I tried getting the cards here but the stores are out of stock please I need you to help me purchase a gift card and send it to me I will personally pay you back please get back to me if you can handle this so I can tell you the amount
(no periods at the end of sentences and a running text and apple gift card to buy meds???)
First of all, my neighbour would never send an email to me, she texts, or calls. She was fine yesterday. I immediately phoned her about the email but I wasn't the first to call. She had already put a message on Facebook. Then another neighbour came to the door and he'd been conversing with this scammer. He believed it!
I am Block Watch Captain of our strata and have everyone in our strata's email so I sent out a quick Scam Alert! The neighbour who the email was sent to is my Block Watch Co-Captain so I'm seeing a little humour in this. I always try to find a little humour in everything.
I forwarded it to Cheryl and was pretty sure she didn't break her phone. I was right, another scammer. Who in North America puts a +1 before the area code?
That was my last four days. Hope yours were a little less eventful!

Steveston
We moved to Steveston in 1976 and lived there for 34 years. We had a house built in a new area because it was the cheapest place to build in Richmond. We were two blocks from the Fraser River. There was a busy BC Packers fish plant that when the wind blew, you knew they were canning fish. There were sand dunes at Garry Point. I can't believe how it's transformed in the last 40 years. It's a destination now.
Yesterday, we met friends I worked with at Pacific Western Airlines in Steveston. We had a wonderful dinner at the Blue Canoe.
We dropped in the Tram Museum on our way to the restaurant. My cousin Gordon volunteers there, but it was his day off. They have restored B C Electric Train Car 1220 one of the original trams that ran on the Interurban Vancouver to Steveston route from 1913 to 1958.
The village was very busy but always fun to visit! A lovely afternoon with long time friends.

Mt. St. Helen's - 44 years ago!
Before After |
Footage of the explosion
On May 18, 1980, Washington's Mount St. Helens erupted in a cataclysmic blast that left 57 people dead and an area the size of Chicago completely devastated. It was 327 KMs away from where we lived. We were sleeping and it woke us up! We did get some ash, but nothing much compared to other communities.

Big Bang Theory/Young Shelton/Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage
We loved watching The Big Bang Theory. Rarely do spin offs become hits, but after the Big Bang Theory, the writers created a spin off series, Young Sheldon. It was the story of the childhood of the lead character on the Big Bang Theory, Sheldon Cooper.

Airline Seating
I'm old enough to remember when you could actually sit comfortably in an economy seat. I'm 5"9" and my husband is 6'5". I never book a flight without finding the aircraft type and going on Seat Guru to check out the legroom and pick a decent seat. If you've never checked it out, it will tell you good and bad seats. It also gives the legroom and seats to avoid.

Cruise ship problems
On April 26th the Radiance of the Seas was scheduled to depart to Alaska from Vancouver for a 7 night voyage on its first sailing for 2024. All the passengers boarded on Friday and then Saturday afternoon they were told the cruise was cancelled. They could stay on the ship in the Port of Vancouver until Sunday afternoon to make arrangements to return home, or organize a different vacation from Vancouver. The ship had an issue with the ship's propulsion. The ship was repaired in Vancouver and the next sailing departed on schedule.
Royal Caribbean gave them their money back as onboard credit with any remaining amount refunded, increased their future cruise credit to 100% of their fare and kept its open-bar policy for the remaining time on board. The line also offered to reimburse trip change fees up to $250 for guests traveling domestically and $400 for international travel and additional reimbursements for hotel and transportation costs, among other compensation.
On Saturday, my friend was scheduled to board the Sapphire Princess for a 14 day cruise to Alaska from Vancouver. At 5:30 AM Saturday morning, I got an emergency email from Princess asking me to contact my client and tell him "boarding will now be at 3:00 PM, do not come earlier"! He lives in Vancouver, no problem.
On Saturday my friend Pina was at the Port of Vancouver and watched the Sapphire Princess get towed into port! Passengers disembarked at noon and the new cruisers started boarding at 3:00 PM. They left at midnight, going very slow. They have propulsion problems too!
I got an email from the passenger on board that stated:
Hi Linda: new itinerary;
14 May, Juneau ~3-10 pm; 15 May, Skagway; 16 May, cancelled Glacier Bay; 18 May, Whittier.
"you will receive a 75% refund of the cruise or cruise tour fare you paid along with a Future Cruise Credit (FCC) of 75% of the cruise or cruise tour fare.... adjustments to taxes, fees, and port expenses ..." for North Bound portion only.
I know if passengers have travelled a long way, they compensate for travel on a case by case basis. This looks to me like fair compensation. They are getting 7 days of meals, entertainment and activities. They missed Ketchikan and Glacier Bay. Very upsetting for people who have travelled a long way. They are repairing the ship enroute to Alaska and let's hope it's repaired for the trip south.
The reason it did sail northbound is there are a lot of passengers onboard have a cruise tour booked when they reach Alaska. There are also many people ready to board on Saturday who have done a cruise tour who are looking forward to a 7 day cruise southbound.
I've been on ships that have missed ports because of weather and my attitude is, enjoy the ship, it's going to be a glorious day at sea. I hope the passengers make the best of an unfortunate situation.

Roxy the Grand Cat
This was taken on a hot summer day! |
This is Roxy. She was a rescue cat that Cheryl's had for 11 years. She was two years old when she arrived at their house. She's gorgeous but she hates everyone but Cheryl and Dave. Last year she got very sick. Cheryl took her to the vet and she almost died. The vet was actually surprised she managed to recover. She spent a couple of nights at the hospital and Cheryl gave her intravenous for over a week at home. She needs medication twice a day to live! At least it's a cream you put in her ear so no pills to pop in her throat.
Cheryl, Dave and Lexie went on a 4 day cruise on the Majestic Princess. I've always looked after the cats. It was no problem, once a day, clean the kitty litter and fill the dishes. Cheryl asked if I would make sure Roxy has her meds! Roxy sleeps under the king bed. At 6 AM, you get the vacuum cleaner, catch the cat when she runs from under the bed, wrap her like a burrito and get the medication in her ear. Repeat at 6 PM. This takes two people. She growls and hisses is upset mom has gone and hates us! But, we managed to get her meds in her ear. No stress for me!!!
We celebrated Mother's Day last weekend. Today I picked them up at Pier 91 in Seattle. What wonderful weather and they had a nice cruise! We stopped at Costco for some groceries and Bellis Fair for some Taylor vinyl's!
