Is Light Rail Transit right for Surrey?

If you ever use King George Blvd. you will get caught in major traffic.
Our city decided to eliminate two traffic lanes and go forward with light rail on a north-south route.
Today we went to Surrey City Hall.  On our way, we saw the prototype of the Light Rapid Transit proposed for Surrey.  We didn't stop and read the paraphernalia because I've followed this from day one.

I've ridden the light rail in Calgary and Salt Lake City.  Calgary C-Train has recorded 43 people killed along the line.  TRAX, the Salt Lake City light rail reported 84 injuries and 7 deaths between 2007 and 2010. The trains are quiet and you can't hear them coming.  People jaywalking accounts for most of the injuries.  The trains will stop at all the traffic lights and have a driver.  They say it will be faster than a bus?  Am I missing something?

They've got three security guards inside the car.  Not sure why on a Tuesday morning that's necessary.

The car is very narrow.  Much narrower than Skytrain!  There will be a driver in each car.
If you have driven down King George Blvd, it doesn't look like this!

This is what the photo should show

In 2012, TransLink and the Ministry of Transportation released the Surrey Rapid Transit Study Analysis,  which looked at 14 alternatives for building rapid transit South-of-the-Fraser. The best of these alternatives was "RRT1A", which combined a SkyTrain extension to Langley with Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) to White Rock, Newton and Guildford. RRT1A served all of the proposed transit corridors, met all capacity requirements, and had the most transportation benefits of any alternative.

Instead, Surrey has decided to pursue a street-level Light Rail (LRT) system - even though it was not considered the best alternative. The study actually found that building an LRT would result in a net loss to society, rather than a net benefit.  The LRT alternative did not have a positive benefit-cost ratio, and would not cost less to build than the RRT 1A alternative - instead costing more to operate in the long term.

A street-level LRT is not the system that will serve Surrey best in the future. With its total costs now topping $2.6 billion it will be the most expensive mistake in our region's history.

SkyTrain for Surrey's campaign vision is to see an Expo Line: Langley Extension on Fraser Highway and a Bus Rapid Transit system on King George Blvd & 104 Ave, instead of a street-level LRT. Passengers boarding an extended Expo Line at Langley Centre Station would reach Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver in less than 60 minutes.

Our civic election is October 20th.  This better be an election issue because many people are against the LRT the City of Surrey and Translink are going ahead with.  I voted for Mayor Linda Hepner, and my leg hurts because I've been kicking myself for about a year!

Richard's 80 and Brad is 50 - Milestone year!

Yesterday, Maria invited the family to Kings Links for a birthday dinner for Richard's 80th birthday (May 1st) and Brad's 50th birthday (June 23rd).  She invited 63 people and said "no gifts, just bring cards made by your children".  There were 25 children invited.  Maria had kites, bubbles, squirt guns, badminton sets, frisbees and bean bag toss!  They could putt or go to the driving range.  She closed the restaurant and the children had a great time.  After dinner the golf carts went out.  A "licensed" driver drove the kids around.  I think the parents and grandparents had just as much fun as the kids.  Maria is a gracious hostess and everyone had a great time.  Richards sister Irene and brother David came with their families from Victoria.

Great cake!

If you want to get your kite really high, you find someone in a golf cart to drive you and it works just fine!
Jack had the highest kite!  Way to go Jack!

Lots of kites flying, great wind at the golf course

One of the cards made by the kids.  How great is that!

Guy the Beagle from death row to Kensington Palace!

Guy’s unlikely journey began after a shelter in the US sent an email to Dolores Doherty, who runs an Ontario-based organization, A Dogs Dream Rescue, which saves beagles slated to be put down in the US and brings them to Canada to be adopted.

This time, a shelter in Kentucky was asking if she would be interested in a 17 lb. beagle that had been found in the woods. After he had spent days at the shelter, nobody had come forward to adopt him, and the dog was on the euthanasia list. “I always say yes,” said Doherty. “I can’t say no. I’m a sucker.”

A network of volunteers helped transport the dog more than 500 miles to the Canadian border, each of them driving him for one hour before handing him over to the next waiting car.

He hadn’t even been in Canada for a full day when Doherty brought him to an adoption event on the outskirts of Toronto. “He was just sitting there with those big beagle sad eyes, looking so depressed. He was irresistible,” said Doherty.

Dozens of people had turned up to meet the 20 or so dogs up for adoption, including Markle, who at the time was living in Toronto while her TV series Suits was being filmed. Meghan adopted Guy and the story begins:

Worried about impressing your in-laws? Here’s a suggestion: get a dog.

People fawn over canines, and Queen Elizabeth II is no exception. The lead British royal is known for her love of Corgis—she's bred several of the short-legged pups, the last of which died in April and now she’s cozying up to a new dog that’s just joined the royal family: Meghan Markle’s four-legged friend, Guy.

The Duchess of Sussex adopted Guy the Beagle in Toronto several years ago, and she moved the 17-pound pup with her when she took up shelter at Kensington Palace to live with Prince Harry. Guy originates from Kentucky, but it looks like his Southern charm has officially been replaced with royally British behavior.

As the Daily Mail pointed out, Queen Elizabeth was photographed in the backseat of a car with a dog that looks a lot like Guy the day before Harry and Markle’s royal wedding, meaning even if the monarch did have nerves about her grandson's big day, she’s for sure warmed up to Markle’s (other) main man.

The palace never confirmed whether the pup in question is Guy indeed, however, fans were able to identify him by the size of his ears. Guy even reportedly participated in the royal wedding and stole leftovers at the reception.

In their first post-engagement interview, we learned that, funnily enough, the Queen’s Corgis also love Markle in return. “The Corgis took to you straight away,” Harry said to Markle, “I’ve spent the last 33 years being barked at; this one walks in, absolutely nothing.” She agreed and said they decided to sweetly lie on her feet during tea.

Glad Queen Elizabeth  has a new companion.

Dogwood Trees

Dogwood is the official flower of British Columbia.  I've always loved the dogwood!  Cheryl has a gorgeous dogwood tree in the front of her home.  Donna went to VanDusen Botanical Gardens in Vancouver and took these beautiful pictures.

Four years ago we had a tree in our back yard blow over in the wind.  I can't say I was upset as I really did't like it.  Because we live in a strata complex, we can't plant a tree without the council approving it.  When the tree blew over, we asked the Landscaping Committee to come over.  They agreed the tree was not able to be replanted and approved a dogwood for our back yard.

We went to Art Knapp's Garden Center and purchased a 4' pink dogwood blossom tree.  The flowers were pale pink and there were quite a few flowers on it.  The next spring, no flowers.  I went back to Art Knapp's and the fellow sold me plant food and told me how much and when to feed my tree.  I faithfully did what he said....two more years, no blooms.  However, this year, the tree has grown to about 12' and I finally,
12' tree and one flower.!  Maybe next year I'll get two flowers!
I will continue to feed, talk to and water this tree.  It looks healthy just a little bare.

Cleaning my inbox

All these years, I had it wrong.
I have a problem....yes I see a Coors Lite

We had a cat who only came running when you used the automatic can opener.
I gave the automatic opener away, and to this day I use a manual one.
Maybe I should get another cat!

Isn't he funny...something Cec may do if he sees this post

I need a deck like this one, anyone know where they have them?

I'm going to Florida in November, I'll have to find out where this is!

My email continues to amuse me.  Thank you to my friends who continue to make me smile every morning when I open my inbox!

Things that make me laugh

Some days you need a good laugh!  I looked up Laughter is the Best Medicine on Google and got this:

“Laughter is the Best Medicine”

A Proverb from the Wisdom of Solomon

Medical science says that laughter produces chemicals in the bodies that relieve stress and enhance one’s physical and mental health. The Bible told of this long before man’s findings.
Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
