This time, a shelter in Kentucky was asking if she would be interested in a 17 lb. beagle that had been found in the woods. After he had spent days at the shelter, nobody had come forward to adopt him, and the dog was on the euthanasia list. “I always say yes,” said Doherty. “I can’t say no. I’m a sucker.”
A network of volunteers helped transport the dog more than 500 miles to the Canadian border, each of them driving him for one hour before handing him over to the next waiting car.
He hadn’t even been in Canada for a full day when Doherty brought him to an adoption event on the outskirts of Toronto. “He was just sitting there with those big beagle sad eyes, looking so depressed. He was irresistible,” said Doherty.
Dozens of people had turned up to meet the 20 or so dogs up for adoption, including Markle, who at the time was living in Toronto while her TV series Suits was being filmed. Meghan adopted Guy and the story begins:
People fawn over canines, and Queen Elizabeth II is no exception. The lead British royal is known for her love of Corgis—she's bred several of the short-legged pups, the last of which died in April and now she’s cozying up to a new dog that’s just joined the royal family: Meghan Markle’s four-legged friend, Guy.
The Duchess of Sussex adopted Guy the Beagle in Toronto several years ago, and she moved the 17-pound pup with her when she took up shelter at Kensington Palace to live with Prince Harry. Guy originates from Kentucky, but it looks like his Southern charm has officially been replaced with royally British behavior.
As the Daily Mail pointed out, Queen Elizabeth was photographed in the backseat of a car with a dog that looks a lot like Guy the day before Harry and Markle’s royal wedding, meaning even if the monarch did have nerves about her grandson's big day, she’s for sure warmed up to Markle’s (other) main man.
The palace never confirmed whether the pup in question is Guy indeed, however, fans were able to identify him by the size of his ears. Guy even reportedly participated in the royal wedding and stole leftovers at the reception.
In their first post-engagement interview, we learned that, funnily enough, the Queen’s Corgis also love Markle in return. “The Corgis took to you straight away,” Harry said to Markle, “I’ve spent the last 33 years being barked at; this one walks in, absolutely nothing.” She agreed and said they decided to sweetly lie on her feet during tea.
