Booking your own travel?

A380 This aircraft flies daily during the summer from Vancouver to Heathrow.  It's quiet and comfortable
I've been travelling as thrifty as I can for years and I've learned a few things along the way.  Airlines change flight prices, hourly!  If you are booking a flight you want and are shopping around, use more than one browser.  Yes, they track what you do and if you are searching the same itinerary with the same site your price will go up!  If you find a great price, do not close that browser because the fare may never be that price again.

Be careful when you are using third party booking sites.  While they offer cheaper fares, they do not give customer service.  If you have a question you will most likely get voice mail or a phone that doesn't get answered.   Expedia and Travelocity are good sites but many others are not reliable.

Sign up for seat sales with the airlines!  They will let you know by email, Twitter or Facebook when they have promotion codes or seat sales.  Typically they are for off days and rarely during Christmas or Spring Break.  They are filling seats that would go empty on off travel days.

If you aren't sure of what you are doing, use a travel agent!  They have access to various databases that aren't available to the public.  A travel agent friend of mine had a lady come in to book a Disney Vacation.  She got a quote and left.  A few days later returned and said "please help me, I booked online".  She found a cheaper fare, booked and paid it in full.  She didn't realize it was in US Funds and the Canadian travel agent price was better.  Of course when she booked it was non-refundable and she paid more.
