Small family businesses are suffering...

The one luxury I give myself is a manicure and pedicure.  I've been going to different spa/nail salons for a few years.  Five years ago a nice spa/nail shop opened in the mall close to me.  The family that owns it immigrated from Vietnam.  They have an incredible work ethic.  Their shop is open seven days a week!  They never take time off.  They are wonderful people and the business did very well until March when the virus made them close down.  The dad got a job right away at a friends warehouse where they were making hand sanitizer.

When they were able to re-open, I booked an appointment.  They followed all the health department guidelines.  Plexiglass, masks when you walk in, sign your name and phone number and wash your hands.  It was always clean, but now you could smell the disinfectant, it was so spotless.

On Friday, I thought I should make a nail appointment.  Now, I know these people well and I text their personal cell phones and they reply by text.  I asked when I could come in, the answer was "anytime"!   Really, Christmas is two weeks away they should be solidly booked.  I was the only person in there.  He told me quietly (so the others couldn't hear), it's bad and he doesn't expect to be open much longer.

Saturday morning I had a pedicure.  I didn't really need it but it feels great and again the salon on a Saturday was not busy.

A lot of family businesses have and will be closing.  I'm hoping the vaccine will turn things around for these hard working family owned businesses.
