Surrey history

I got a PDF with some awesome old Surrey photos.  I forwarded them to my friends and they sent me some great replies.  Even if you saw the PDF, you may enjoy some of the comments I received.   I'm attaching the pictures along with the replies:

I loved the lineup at the liquor store.  It's long moved to a brand new location and is one of the better BC Liquor stores in the area.

From one of my neighbours:

Linda: Thanks for those amazing historical photos!  Of course, I just had to know what the Whoopee-Dipper was!

See article link. 😷  Whoopie-Dipper

From one of the volunteers at Santa Letter writing:

How well I remember 1954.  I was new to this area and remember, the Coop, clova theater, duckworths, the 5 and dime store  etc.  Families used to come to cloverdale for the day.  Moms shopped at the Coop and then went for lunch, kids went to the dime store to spend their allowance and then to a matinee.  Dads went to watch the Vancouver mounties play ball and too the pub(  or beer parlour as they were called  back then.

The only choices for shopping in those days was, Cloverdale or across the river to New west.  There were no malls in those days, strip or other ones.  And Langley you would miss if you blinked while driving thru.

From my former workmate and longtime travel partner:

Good pics...fond memories. The Round up is still there. It was my Dad's "hang out" for food before he would leave for the Turf to get the latest tips on horse racing at ExPark. The Turf is where he would go to wash down the food he ate and "drown out his sorrows"!! Aw,, the good ole days.  L

In the 80's when we worked together she lived on a farm with her husband just north of Fry's Corner.  She drove from there to the Vancouver airport every day in her Volkswagen bug.  We thought her commute was crazy but she loved the farm!

Louise and Rich bought their first house in Ocean Park in the 1960's!
From one of our friends from Canada Post Heritage Club:

Thanks for sharing pictures....I found it very interesting.

There are a couple of cabins/houses I recognized from the Crescent Beach photo that are still standing today! ( of course 1962 wasn’t that long ago)😉

No McDonalds, Tim Horton's or Starbucks in Newton in 1967!

There isn't a picture, but my next door neighbour's father was the first RCMP officer in Cloverdale!   It's a small world and I'm surprised at how many long time Surrey residents still live here.

My late Aunt was a teacher at the Surrey Center Elementary School.  She was born in the 1920's so she was one of the very early educators.   Her husband worked for the City of Surrey and was responsible for changing the street names into the grid system.   Their daughter was in the Miss Surrey pageant.  No name, no pictures, but she was and still is beautiful!

It's time for Aunty Acid
