Day 5 - Icy Strait

HAPPY CANADA DAY

Yesterday we were scheduled to dock in Skagway but were diverted to Icy Strait because of the rock slide that happened last Thursday.  We were planning a shore excursion to Carcross in the Yukon but it of course got cancelled.  We'd done that excursion before and it was one of my favorites.  Cheryl rebooked it for their cruise in August so Lexie gets to see the Yukon.

Lexie and I left early for a ride into town.  There are only 800 people in Icy Strait so there isn't much to see.  It's on an island and the ferry comes in twice a week with supplies.  The people are very friendly.  It's a 1.5 mile walk into town but the bus was $5 return so we took the bus.  Cec stayed behind, still exhausted from our huge day yesterday.  It was cloudy but we knew the clouds would burn off and it would be a gorgeous day.

It's a very remote village, lots of fishing boats

We've seen Gordon Greenwald before.  He's a retired school teacher from Hoonah and the local totem pole carver.

We went back to the ship and had a nice lunch at Gigi's pizza.  Lexie's favorite and it's very good.  Then the three of us went back on shore and went up the gondola.  It just opened in May 2022 and it's awesome!   The views from the top of the mountain are amazing.

The clouds were gone and it was gorgeous on the top of the mountain

At 5:30 the Captain came on the over head speakers saying we are ready to leave but there is one person not on board.  He asked everyone to go onto their balconies and cheer when they appeared.  We did along with many other people and it was really funny to watch the person run!  Then the ship's horns played the first few bars of "The Love Boat" and we sailed away.

My pictures are not uploading.  When I'm home I'll post Mendenhall Glacier pictures.  Even yesterday's pictures, I've only downloaded half of what I took.  Oh well, that's satellite internet at sea.
