I write very few posts about current affairs or politics. I keep my thoughts to myself, and respect what others say even if I don't agree. What happened yesterday in Utah was horrific. Whatever your political opinion, assassination is not an option!
Yesterday, I wrote a blog about King Charles. I've understood royalty doesn't get involved in politics. However, King Charles said he would be changing things, it's a new more modern monarchy.
A long time friend sent me an email. She's visiting Montreal and I was thrilled she even took time to read my blog. She brings up an excellent point:
Just read your blog, not all of it, but enough to
understand that you’re not in agreement with King Charles decision to invite
Trump for a visit.
I also was upset months ago when Prime Minister Starmer first
publicly presented Trump with the invitation.
But then I thought about it and wondered if it might probably be the
best thing Charles can do in support of Canada.
It would not be advisable for him to publicly criticize Trump. However, by having Trump in his kingdom,
surrounded with all the traditional trappings of Britain’s glory, Charles may
be able to impress upon Trump the extent of the British Commonwealth. I expect that behind closed doors Charles will
diplomatically try to make clear to Trump that Canada is a very valued country
within the Commonwealth and that he, King Charles III, of the British Commonwealth of nations, does
not appreciate Trump’s aggression towards us. Charles did express great support
for our sovereignty when he read the speech from the throne when opening
parliament.
Anyway, that’s what I think and hope for.
I also understand that officially the monarchy does not
get involved with politics. I’m just
hoping that Charles can unofficially let Trump realize the scope of the
Commonwealth of which we are a member.
And a strong and loyal ally to Britain.
And of course whatever might transpire with this visit,
we can expect that publicly, Trump will portray it as a great success that he
alone is responsible for bringing about.
And Charles, will be gracious and not contradict him.
