The Coral Princess is was built in 2003. Passenger capacity is 1,970 and the weight is 91.629 gross tons. Island Princess is her sister ship. We were on the Island Princess a few years ago and loved her. The big difference with both these ships is the buffet is at the bow (or as I call it) the pointy end. Every other ship I've been on buffets are aft.
One of her unique features are the cylinders on the top deck:
The ship is powered by a General Electric 25,000kW gas turbine located in the funnel along with two 16,200kW diesel-alternators fitted in the main machinery room using Wärtsilä prime movers. The turbine and diesel engines drive three alternators that supply power to two main switchboards and twin 20,000kW Alstom variable speed propulsion motors. This propulsion system, known as the EnviroEngine, is the first in the cruise industry to fully utilize this new system. It is also the first in the Princess fleet to use a gas-turbine power generator. The placement of the turbo engine in the funnel freed up additional passenger space in the two lower decks allowing it to be utilized for public amenities.
To represent the gas turbines, the funnel has two cylindrical turbines placed at the top. Although serving no function, the ship was the first to debut the decorative cylinders.
What a gorgeous day in October to sail out of Vancouver Harbour!
Check in was a breeze. We got to the port at 10:25 and were on board by 10:50! Very well organized and no long lines. Rooms were ready at noon, faster than other cruises.
We had a wonderful lunch in the dining room with Julie and Laurie. I had a problem with my Medallion app! Last Thursday it asked me to update, which I did. When I went back on the app after the update, my ukulele lessons and activities were all there but it wanted me to order my medallion again and my dining reservations were gone! After lunch I went to the dining room and not only got a private table for two but we are beside a window! Dinner was delicious. After dinner we watched a singer/impressionist who was really good. Then off to see the magician and after Musical Bingo. A great way to start this cruise.
I managed to get a beautiful sunset. Vancouver Island in the background:
