Electric vehicle?

Cheryl's car was 12 years old and she was ready to buy a brand new car.  She went to a Hyundai dealer she dealt with before and they wouldn't even put her on a list.  It's a two year wait and they are not even taking names.  They told her many people cancel when their car arrives and she could wait.  She wanted to get one soon, so Dave went to the internet.

My son-in-law is a car guy.  He knows a lot about cars and found her a two year old BMW that was short range electric/hybrid with 20,000 km's.  She bought a gorgeous red car!  It's now one month old.  She gets 30 KM on an electric charge that gets her to the office and grocery store.  They have an extra 220V outlet on their electric box because their house was built to have a basement suite.  However, with just a regular plug it charges overnight on the 120V garage plug.  She said her electric is up minimally but her petrol bill went from $500.00 a month to $33.00 and that was before gas dropped by 25 cents.

Dave was so pleased with her car, he bought one too!  His is white and a little larger and a lovely vehicle.  They are saving more than $1,000.00 a month!

That smile is even bigger now she's saving so much money on petrol!

Earthquakes in Canada

I had an alert last night on my phone at 7:21 PM a 4.3 earthquake was 74 miles away!  It was between Port Townsend and Port Ludlow in Puget Sound and 35.5 miles deep.  We were eating Thanksgiving dinner and thankfully didn't feel anything.

Each year, more than 4,000 earthquakes occur in Canada. Most of these are less than 3.0, but some are very large.

Let's explore some of the largest known earthquakes to occur in the borders of present-day Canada.

1. 1700 Cascadia Earthquake [8.7-9.2]: Occurring on the Pacific Coast, the death total of this quake is unknown but it is likely in the thousands. It also spawned a tsunami that hit Japan.

2. 1949 Haida Gwaii Earthquake [8.1]: This earthquake was felt as far north as the Yukon and as far south as Oregon. Damage was limited and there were no deaths due to the sparse population.

3. 2012 Haida Gwaii Earthquake [7.7]: This earthquake caused the hot springs at Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve to run dry. They have since begun flowing again.

4. 1970 Haida Gwaii Earthquake [7.4]: This earthquake was felt over 350 kilometres away. Minor damage was reported.

5. 1933 Baffin Bay Earthquake [7.3]: This earthquake is one of the largest ever recorded north of the Arctic Circle. No damage was reported from the quake.

6. 1946 Vancouver Island Earthquake [7.3]: The largest recorded onshore earthquake in Canadian history, it resulted in two deaths. It also triggered several landslides and nearby communities saw 75% of their chimneys toppled.

7. 1929 Newfoundland Earthquake [7.2]: This earthquake resulted in property losses of more than $1 million. The tsunami created by the quake also resulted in the deaths of 28 people.

8. 1663 Charlevoix Earthquake [7.0]: This earthquake was felt across eastern North America. It caused massive landslides that altered the nearby landscape. There were no reported deaths.

9. 1918 Vancouver Island Earthquake [6.9]: Occurring just after midnight, this earthquake woke up people all over Vancouver Island and in Vancouver. Damages was reported in various places, including a steel-reinforced concrete lighthouse.

10. 1985 Nahanni Region Earthquake [6.9]: An unusual location for an earthquake, it alarmed many people who had never experienced a quake before. No structural damage was reported.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving

From our home to yours, Happy Canadian Thanksgiving.  I have invited the family over as I'm giving Cheryl a break and cooking this year.  She will help me as she makes the best brussels sprouts and potatoes.  We chose to have dinner on Sunday because Lexie never works on Sunday.

I bought my turkey at Save On Foods last week and didn't have to pay $70 for one. I priced them everywhere and I'm glad I didn't go to Safeway.  Yesterday, I went to Superstore and bought a prime rib for $78.  If I'm spending that amount of money, I prefer prime rib.  So, for Christmas it's prime rib.  I hope Cheryl cooks it as she is wonderful at prime rib!

White Rock Beach

The first two pictures were taken at White Rock Beach by a friend of mine.  I thought I would share them.

I love sunset pictures and this one was taken last night at White Rock Beach

Towel Animals

If you've ever cruised, you are familiar with the towel animals that room stewards create and put in your room. We've had them on our bed, in the bathroom and my favorite, hanging from the ceiling with sunglasses on!

Our friends Mike and Liz just got back from a 14 day cruise on the Noordam.  They asked us to go with them but it conflicted with the short cruise I'd already paid for.  We knew a lot of other passengers too.  Thanks to Lori for these pictures I saw on Facebook, this happened on their cruise:

When we had one of these (with sunglasses on) it actually frightened me when I opened the door.  Then we laughed.

Rest In Peace, Constable Rick O'Brien - wear red today!

Mourners will gather in Langley, B.C., Wednesday for a regimental funeral procession, memorial service and final salute to honour an RCMP officer who was killed in the line of duty last month.

Const. Rick O'Brien was fatally shot while executing a search warrant in Coquitlam on the morning of Sept. 22

Attendance at the funeral service will be limited to family, first responders, officials and invited guests, but members of the public who want to pay their respects are being invited to line the streets and observe the procession to the 2 p.m. service at the Langley Events Centre.

"In lieu of gifts or flowers, individuals are encouraged to wear red on October 4 to recognize and remember Const. Rick O’Brien for his bravery, commitment to public safety, and for making the ultimate sacrifice in service of his community," the B.C. RCMP said in an announcement detailing the memorial plans.

A beautiful tribute

I saw something I'd only ever seen on a tv show. I saw a picture of two firetrucks and a bunch of Firefighters on the overpass.  Ladders...
