Plumber jokes

On Saturday, we had a plumber come to our house.  We needed to replace a bathroom sink that had cracks.  I can't believe a sink in a bathroom that's used by guests has cracks after 15 years.  It just goes to show the quality they put into houses these days.  I decided to replace my kitchen sink as I should have done it when we got our new countertops.  I'm really glad I didn't ask husband to do it.  It was a huge job, nothing fit and the plumber was fantastic!

I opened my email and I found these pictures!

This is not my new sink!

This calls for a choice:

Do I remove the door or no privacy?

Bet the toilet paper holder is behind

the door too.

Apparently, you don't want

anyone seeing your face, but

everything else is okay?

The oak seat is a nice touch.

And the purpose for the door is?

This stall is for people that have arms

like an orangutan.

This would be the "half bath" noted in

the real estate listing?

Very Classy!  And, only three

steps to the throne when

you're in a hurry!

How does this even get past the

planning phase?

And now drum roll please…

AND THE PLUMBER OF THE YEAR AWARD

GOES T O…

Absolutely brilliant…

The Glades

Louise told me about The Glades a few years ago.  She said it was a wonderful place to visit.  In previous years they would only open onto the public on Mother's Day and the crowds were huge.  I'm not fond of big crowds.  This year they opened Saturdays for six weeks with limited attendance because of COVID.  There was a charge this year of $7 per person.  It's now run by the City and I was happy to pay.  Cheryl, Dave and Lexie had tickets for the same time.  The teenager changed her mind when it was time to leave.  I thought that was funny although I did miss her.

The Glades covers 15 acres and includes a new parking lot and areas for future development. The original plantings cover the 5-acre garden, and contain over 1,600 mature rhododendrons, azaleas and companion plants. Some of the rhododendrons are more than 6 metres (20 feet) tall, and are ablaze in colour in the spring. The garden also contains a superb collection of fine trees, many of which are now designated as heritage.  It's very close to the US Border and borders the Peace Arch Golf Course.

Here is the story of The Glades:

In 1956, Lydia and Murray Stephen purchased a 5-acre parcel of land riddled with blackberries, alder trees and stumps; remnants from turn of the century land clearings. Murray’s dream was to recreate the beautiful rhododendron gardens remembered from his youth in Scotland. They renovated the land, planting rhododendrons, azaleas, exotic trees and shrubs

After Murray passed away in 1970, the garden fell into a state of decline until Jim and Elfriede DeWolf purchased the garden in 1994 and began their restoration. The garden saw another stage of transformations in 2002 when the DeWolfs gifted The Glades to the City of Surrey. Numerous renovations and additions have taken place, and new ones are on the horizon. The DeWolfs have always given much input into the garden, ensuring its footprint is not altered, but enhanced in a manner that Murray Stephen would approve.

We should have gone two weeks earlier as the azaleas were almost finished, but still gorgeous!

What a wonderful way to spend a Saturday afternoon!

Residential schools!

Kamloops Indian Residential School
I know two people who attended residential schools!  They had trouble talking about the horrors they went through.  One school was in BC and the other in Manitoba,  All the residential schools were funded by the Federal Government and run by churches.  My friends went to one Catholic and one Anglican Church Residential School.  People blame the government and while yes, they let it continue, the churches let the neglect and both physical and sexual abuse go on for years.   One of the students was taken at age 5 and the school was across the street from his home.  He would look out the window and see his parents!  He wasn't allowed to go home except on school holidays.

When I worked at Kings Links one of the members opened up to me.  We would talk most mornings when it was quiet and he told me things he never even told his wife!   Both these people have now passed away.

At the Kamloops Residential School above, 215 children's bodies were found in unmarked graves!   This school was in operation from 1890 to 1969.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission issued its final report on residential schools more than five years ago. The nearly 4,000-page account details the harsh mistreatment inflicted on Indigenous children at the institutions, where at least 3,200 children died amid abuse and neglect.

This is a horrific part of our history.

Cruising has resumed!

RCCL have started to contact some of the 250,000 people who registered for a Volunteer "Test" Cruise to let them know when they are getting their free cruise.  I've heard they will chose people who have cruised many times with RCCL.  I did not apply and I am not anxious to cruise just yet.

The first MSC cruise out of Southampton has returned.  There is a You Tube video of a passenger who explains what happened on the first cruise.  First, the MSC ship is large and very nice.  It regularly holds over 6,000 passengers but the first cruise sailed with only1,000 passengers.  There were lots of TV crews and reporters on board.  I thought it was a great You Tube and if you have 25 minutes and want to hear about all the changes and procedures now, check this out:

MSC Virtuosa

Great Truths and the Four Stages of Life

GREAT TRUTHS THAT LITTLE CHILDREN HAVE LEARNED:

1) No matter how hard you try, you can't baptise cats..

2) When your Mum is mad at your Dad, don't let her brush your hair.

3) If your sister hits you, don't hit her back. They always catch the second person.

4) Never ask your 3-year old brother to hold a tomato.

5) You can't trust dogs to watch your food..

6) Don't sneeze when someone is cutting your hair..

7) Never hold a Dust-Buster and a cat at the same time.

8) You can't hide a piece of broccoli in a glass of milk.

9) Don't wear polka-dot underwear under white shorts.

10) The best place to be when you're sad is Grandma's lap.

GREAT TRUTHS THAT ADULTS HAVE LEARNED:

1) Raising teenagers is like nailing jelly to a tree.

2) Wrinkles don't hurt.

3) Families are like fudge...mostly sweet, with a few nuts.

4) Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.

5) Laughing is good exercise. It's like jogging on the inside.

6) Middle age is when you choose your cereal for the fibre, not the toy.

GREAT TRUTHS ABOUT GROWING OLD

1) Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional.

2) Forget the health food.. I need all the preservatives I can get.

3) When you fall down, you wonder what else you can do while you're down there.

4) You're getting old when you get the same sensation from a rocking chair that you once got from a roller coaster.

5) It's frustrating when you know all the answers but nobody bothers to ask you the questions.

6) Time may be a great healer, but it's a lousy beautician.

7) Wisdom comes with age, but sometimes age comes alone.

THE FOUR STAGES OF LIFE:

1) You believe in Santa Claus.

2) You don't believe in Santa Claus.

3) You are Santa Claus.

4) You look like Santa Claus.

The end of COVID restrictions is coming!

Yesterday Dr. Bonnie and Premier Horgan announced the provinces gradual reopening plan.  Thanks to all the people who have got their first vaccine, our COVID cases have greatly declined!   After the Spanish Flu they had the roaring 20's.  By the phone calls and texts I received yesterday, we will have the roaring 22's!

The travel business is booming!   People are booking huge trips as things are opening up.  If anyone asks me about price drops, my answer is:  book as soon as possible, I doubt any price drops will happen.  I've seen cruise prices increase in the last two months.  I'm guessing the cruise lines and tour operators will try to recoup the cash they've lost in the last few months.  Should anyone want to go on WestJet Vacations to one of their sun destinations, they are giving anyone who books by June 30th, free insurance!

Here is the plan as long as things continue to decline:

Cec was thrilled when Dr. Bonnie says she will pick a date in July and make it BC HUG DAY!

A beautiful story!

Donna was a bridesmaid my wedding.  I got married in 1967 and our lives went into different directions.  Our mothers remained friends for many years.   When Cheryl was born she crocheted a lovely pink blanket.   When my mother passed away, Donna called me and it was so nice to reconnect.  You live in the same city but seem to be so far away.

I see Donna frequently now and she came out a week and half ago for a social distance outside lunch on a nice day.  We are planning to cruise to Alaska in June 2022 together.

Donna has a blog and I did not know this touching story.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Africa

I just watched this You Tube about Africa.  It really makes you think!

My trip to South Africa, and Zimbabwe has been rescheduled to March 24, 2022.  We are watching the COVID outbreaks and hope it gets under control.  There is a large population and their vaccine doses are very low.   Fingers crossed!

City chickens

My friend gave me some eggs from his backyard chickens!   One is a double yolker!   It's huge.  Apparently this chicken lays these eggs regularly!   I took a picture and put a Tetley's tea bag on one side and an extra large egg on the other side!

Last night we had a wonderful omelet for dinner.  I've never seen an egg that big!  Ouch!

BC Vaccinations open for 12 to 17 year olds

On Wednesday, BC Health Minister Adrian Dix announced BC was opening up registration for COVID vaccines for children 12 to 17.  Word got out fast and many parents rushed to register their children.  Cheryl registered Lexie immediately.   I told her when the vaccine appointment notification came in, just get her in wherever, whenever and I will take her.

Thursday night very late the email arrived.  Cheryl checked Surrey, Delta, and Langley.  The best appointment available was at the Cloverdale Recreation Center, which is very close to where they live.  It was the very next day at 12:35 PM so Lexie would have to miss afternoon school.  I couldn't believe how fast she got in!

I picked her up at the from school mid-morning and she said "I'm so happy".   I said, "long weekend or vaccine"?  She said "both".

When Lexie was a baby, I looked after her when Cheryl worked.  Every day she came was wonderful.  Watching her grow and teaching her different things was a joy!   Cheryl asked me to take her to her family doctor for her shots.  The doctor's office was in Steveston and we would put her in the stroller.  She would point out birds and flowers on the way there, and scream on the way home!  Oh well, she really needs these shots.

So, I'm looking forward to taking her for the COVID vaccine but Cheryl wanted to take her and took the afternoon off.  Okay, no problem but why do you get the fun ones?   These are the things you can laugh at.

I asked Lexie what she got.  She said "a fireman"!   That's my girl!

Alaska Cruises are sailing this summer!

With the passing of the Alaska Tourism Restoration Act, Princess and Holland America announced yesterday Alaska cruises will resume.  It could have started in May but with all the US red tape and the push back from the Canadian Government it's now starting July 25th to September 25th.

I am upset at the Canadian federal government!   They should have allowed the Alaska cruise ships a short port stop at Canadian ports.  They didn't need to let anyone disembark but just dock to fulfil the requirements of the PVA.   Ports Canada would have received port fees and they are good revenue!

95% of cruise passengers will have to show proof they have received two vaccines. 5% of the passengers could board if they have a medical condition confirmed with a doctors note.  Social distancing will be practiced and many new cleaning practices have been put in place.  The cruise lines have been heavily impacted by this virus and have been working with the CDC to allow cruising to safely resume.  Alaska has a huge tourism industry and they are anxious to resume their short season.

I heard on a news broadcast, when Canada reopens the ports to large cruise ships, the Alaska Tourism Restoration Act will terminate and future cruises will have to make an international stop.  I hope that is right!

From Holland America:

We’re very pleased to let you know that based on recent guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and positive discussions with government authorities in the United States, we are announcing our plans to restart cruising to Alaska with 10 roundtrip Seattle cruises to Alaska later this summer. Voyages will set sail on Nieuw Amsterdam on Saturday, July 24, 2021 and run through September 25, 2021.

For our shortened Alaska summer season we will be sailing one ship, Nieuw Amsterdam. She will be sailing the 7-Day Alaska Explorer voyages that begin and end on Saturdays.

From Princess Cruises:

There will be 10 departures of our 7-day Inside Passage (with Glacier Bay National Park!) cruise on the Medallion Class-enabled Majestic Princess®. These are roundtrip Sunday departures from Seattle, starting July 25 with the final sailing taking place on September 26. They go on sale 8am PT/11am ET tomorrow – May 21 – pinch me, I must be dreaming!

I'm sure the other cruise lines will be announcing their schedules soon.  I'm really happy to hear the Alaska cruises are resuming.  There are many people ready to book and Alaska is a gorgeous place to sail to.

Old friends

When a dear uncle was at the end of life with cancer, he said "I've lived a wonderful life.  I chose to come to Canada and I wouldn't change a thing".

AND THEN IT IS WINTER You know. . . time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years.
It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all. I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams. But, here it is... the winter of my life and it catches me by surprise...How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go?
I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like. But, here it is...my friends are retired and getting grey...they move slower and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me...but, I see the great change....Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant...but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we'd be.
Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore... it's mandatory! Cause if I don't on my own free will... I just fall asleep where I sit!
And so...now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!
But, at least I know, that though the winter has come, and I'm not sure how long it will last...this I know, that when it's over on this earth...it's NOT over. A new adventure will begin!
Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done...things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime.
So, if you're not in your winter yet...let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life please do it quickly! Don't put things off too long!
Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life...so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember...and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!
"Life" is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one.
LIVE IT WELL! ENJOY TODAY! DO SOMETHING FUN! BE HAPPY! HAVE A GREAT DAY!
REMEMBER:....
"It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.
"LIVE HAPPY IN THIS YEAR AND EVERY YEAR!
LASTLY, CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:
TODAY IS THE OLDEST YOU'VE EVER BEEN, YET THE YOUNGEST YOU'LL EVER BE SO - ENJOY THIS DAY WHILE IT LASTS.
~Your kids are becoming you.......
~Going out is good.. Coming home is better!
~You forget names.... But it's OK because other people forgot they even knew you!!!
~You realize you're never going to be really good at anything
~The things you used to care to do, you no longer care to do, but you really do care that you don't care to do them anymore.
~You sleep better on a lounge chair with the TV blaring than in bed. It's called "pre-sleep".
~You miss the days when everything worked with just an "ON" and "OFF" switch..
~You tend to use more 4 letter words ... "what?"..."when?"... "what?" . ???
~Now that you can afford expensive jewelry, it's not safe to wear it anywhere.
~You notice everything they sell in stores is "sleeveless"?!!!
~What used to be freckles are now liver spots.
~Everybody whispers.
~You have 3 sizes of clothes in your closet.... 2 of which you will never wear.
~But Old is good in some things: Old Songs, Old movies, and best of all, OLD FRIENDS!!
It's Not What You Gather, But What You Scatter That Tells What Kind Of Life You Have Lived.

Wunda Wunda

Wunda Wunda was a children's TV show broadcast out of King TV Seattle from 1953 to 1972.  Ruth Prins, aka Wunda Wunda turned 100 on October 21, 2020!  She still lives in Seattle.  Any child growing up in and around Seattle watched Wunda Wunda and to this day I can still sing her theme song.  My mother changed the words:

Wunda Wunda is my name, isn't that a dirty shame!

I found this online:

Ruth Prins was an actor and drama teacher at the University of Washington in 1949 when KING 5 recruited her to help them develop quality children’s programming.

She started with a weekly televised reading class called “Telaventure Tales," and then hosted the show "Wunda Wunda," which was also the name of her most memorable character.

She had a memorable theme song:

Wunda Wunda is my name. Oh boys and girls, I'm glad you came. We'll have fun as I explain, how we play our Wunda games.

Let me take you by the hand and we'll go to Wonderland. There we'll play with every friend The Wunda games of let's pretend.

Prins aimed her show at young kids who were preparing for school. She was very popular with kids, parents and teachers alike because of her commitment to educate.

"Wunda Wunda" was essentially a 2-hour televised preschool. It taught manners through songs and puppet friends.

The show was incredibly popular and aired from 1952 to 1972. It also was the first local program to receive the prestigious Peabody Award.

After the show, Prins remained in Seattle, earned a doctorate in Education and consulted with daycare centers.

Education through entertainment was a new form of programming that Wunda Wunda helped pioneer.

Just in case you want to see her in, I found this:

Vaccines in a diverse city

I hear people trash talk about our Provincial Health Officer.  I think she's doing a great job.  When you see other provinces, I'm glad we have Dr. Bonnie.

I live in Surrey where many of our citizens do not speak English.  We have the highest case count and the lowest vaccine rate.  They declared our area high risk but the vaccine clinics didn't book up.  They kept lowering the age so they could fill the spots.

The South Asians are a very close knit community.  I worked with a few so I understand the family dynamics.  They buy huge houses and all live together.  The elders look after the little ones.  When the elders are unable to look after themselves, the rest of the residents look after them!   It's a wonderful way to live.  Not my choice, but I admire them.

Their temples are like community centers.  The elders go there for coffee and visits every day.  Students go there after school for programs.  They have gyms, child care and food.  It's like their second home.  The community looks after all of them.

Many of the older generation do not speak English.  They don't have to because they live in their homes and go to their temple where everyone speaks their language.  When COVID hit, this community was hit hard.  One reason because so many people of different ages live in the same home.  They had all kinds of advertising about getting a vaccination in their language but it wasn't working.  Most of the people weren't comfortable going where no one would understand them so they didn't go.

Dr. Bonnie talked to the religious leaders.  Together they decided to hold vaccination clinics at the temples they go to every day!  They are lining up to get vaccinated.  One lady told one of the workers the only reason she went for her vaccine was because she had questions and she wanted them answered.  She didn't speak English.  All the volunteers at the temple were fluent in the language of the community.

Now our cases are declining.  Thank you Dr. Bonnie for understanding our diverse community!

Glen Campbell and the Lone Ranger

For most of the 1960s, Glen Campbell's brilliant guitar playing was known only by a select few top recording studios and artists.

Long before Glen became known nationally as an outstanding vocalist, actor and TV personality, he was one of the most in-demand recording studio guitarists in the world.

He could have earned a 7-figure annual income as a high-end, asked-for studio guitarist for years on end if that had been all he cared to do.

How good was he? The Lone Ranger knows!  You will enjoy.

Take a look at this video, one you may have never seen before. "Hi Yo, Silver, Away!"

It doesn’t get much better than this. "The William Tell Overture" by Giaochino Rossini.

Many of us grew up watching the Lone Ranger and Tonto on black and white television.

Years later, many of us watched the Glen Campbell show on TV as well.

This video is a clip of a younger Glen Campbell playing the William Tell Overture (with symphony orchestra) and dedicating it to Clayton Moore, who played the Lone Ranger and Jay Silverheels, who played Tonto.

You may never have seen Glen play like this before.

This is world-class guitar playing and Campbell makes it look easy; note he is playing a 12 string!

The sounds of Glen Campbell on guitar and the symphony orchestra playing Rossini's "William Tell Overture" will take you back to those golden days of yesteryear, when the strains of Rossini's masterpiece coming over the radio meant the Lone Ranger show was about to begin.

Alaska Cruises may sail this summer!

In a voice vote, the U.S. Senate approved the Alaska Tourism Recovery Act that would permit large cruise ships to operate cruises to Alaska this summer. The act provides a waiver of the U.S. cabotage laws. The measure goes to the U.S. House for approval before it can be sent to President Joe Biden for his signature.

The Act was a simple and direct measure that states that a roundtrip voyage transporting passengers between a port or place in the State of Alaska and a port or place in the State of Washington is deemed a foreign voyage for purposes of the law of the United States. The act remains in effect till February 2022.

The purpose of the effort was to circumvent the Canadian decision to close its ports to large cruise ships until 2022. Under the U.S. Passenger Vessel Services Act, all foreign flag passenger ships are required to stop at a foreign port when transporting American citizens between two U.S. ports. The large cruise ships traditionally have sailed either from the port of Vancouver, Canada, or Seattle, Washington on their summer cruise programs to Alaska. The closure of the Canadian ports and Canada’s refusal of even technical calls, where a ship stops in the port but does not disembark passengers, was effectively blocking the cruise lines from Alaska this year.

Alaskans have been appealing for relief because of the strong impact from the loss of its summer tourism. Cruises to Alaska had been one of the most popular summer programs drawing well over one million passengers each year. Even the small cruise lines, which had not been blocked and are now beginning their summer programs to Alaska, announced that they would support a temporary waiver because of the importance of tourism to the Alaskan economy.

“This has been a struggle to get everyone pulling together, but I think we are at a place where there is a glimmer of hope for Alaska’s tourism industry,” said Senator Lisa Murkowski who along with Senator Dan Sullivan had co-sponsored the Senate bill.  Previous efforts to get the act passed had been stalled by efforts to expand its content to incorporate other safety requirements on the cruise ships.

I hope this is successful!

Farmers

Cec has cousins who still farm in Saskatchewan.  I salute all the people who farm cattle and grow the rest of our food.

We are planning another family reunion.  It will be after planting the crops and before harvesting.  August is the month and hopefully it will happen in 2022 in Edmonton!

North Shore Rescue Society

The north shore mountains have many mountain rescues year round.   They operate with over 50 volunteers 24/7 365 days a year!  They've been volunteering to search and rescue stranded, lost and injured hikers during the spring, summer and fall since 1965.  During the winter they rescue skiers, snowboarders and snowshoers in horrific snow storms with threats of avalanches.  They never charge for their services and rely on donations from the public and have many corporate and service club sponsorships.

The Knowledge Network filmed an excellent series following these volunteers and their rescues called:  Search and Rescue North Shore

North Shore Rescue

I saw this video and it made me think this is the equipment the North Shore Rescue could really use.  They hike into the mountains going through rivers, snow and some dangerous ravines.
