Arrived in Reykjavik

This is the waterfront in Reykjavik.  We didn't sleep much on the plane and arrived at 9:30 AM.  We got a cab from the airport to the city.  It was a 50 minute drive.  We passed the Blue Lagoon and saw some of the volcano from previous flows.  They don't have Uber but there is a fly Bus we could have taken but it takes you to the bus loop and then you get another shuttle to your hotel.  On the cab dashboard, flat rate from KEF to Reykjavik was Icelandic Kroner:  kr 22,400 = Canadian Dollars $251.42.

We checked into our hotel and our room was ready.  We unpacked and then went for a walk to the waterfront that is very close to our hotel.  We found a nice Napoleon pizza place.  It was authentic and the food was delicious.  Two pizzas, a tomato salad and cheese starter and three Italian beers, $170.00 Canadian!  We were hungry and it was delicious.

I tried an eSim for the first time.  If you don't know it's an electric SIM card you install on your cell phone to get very cheap data.  You can't use your cell phone to make calls or text message, but you can make a phone call through wi-fi apps.  I use What's App for calls and messaging.  All your apps, mail and internet work on your phone.  You need to have a newer phone to make this work.  I have a Samsung Galaxy A54 5G and it's compatible.

I ordered it last week and installed the eSim before I left.  The cost for 1 GB of data was $6.50 and 2 GB was $10.50 so I opted for the larger plan.  I doubt very much if I will even use 1 GB as our hotel has free wi-fi.  My carrier at home is Rogers and if I connected to their network it's $16.00 a day!

When we landed and I turned my cell phone off airplane mode.  I was already on the Vodaphone network when it connected!  However, it would not connect to internet.  I went onto the Airalo site and worked with their help desk and with a few minor phone settings it works now,

I follow the Aurora app and I knew the northern lights have been out in Iceland for the last week.  Last night I checked:

That is an excellent Aurora map, so at 1:10 AM, I woke up to see them, and it's 24 hour daylight here, so no chance.  The sun at 1 AM is very nice.

We are having an early night as tomorrow is the Blue Lagoon!
